Hardly any other area in Germany used to be so characterized by burial mounds and megalithic tombs as the North Frisian islands of Sylt, Föhr and Amrum. On Sylt there are over 530 burial mounds and almost 50 megalithic tombs. Much of this rich heritage has been lost over time. Today Beshine is located on one of these graves in Harhoog, the mound of a giant bed. These barrows are often referred to as burial mounds. They were built in an amazingly short time. Erratic blocks, mostly of granite, served as building material. These were probably assembled by ox teams or by muscle power over tree trunks to the intended grave sites and fitted together precisely. In this way, a large stone tomb could be erected within a few months.
